Echuca's Biggest Blokes Lunch History
How do you get 400 blokes to take a Friday afternoon off work and listen to a soft sell on men’s health and prostate cancer awareness in particular?
Organise a venue, 3 course meal, beer & wine, throw in a few ex Aussie test cricketers and the blokes almost trip over themselves in the rush. Well maybe not quite that easy, but it’s a great recipe for a sensational afternoon of hospitality and entertainment.
The lunch started in 2012 based on the concept developed by Chris McPherson and his team in Shepparton a few years earlier. It’s a fundraiser for Prostate Cancer Foundation Australia with funds going to aid research.
Brad McEwan was MC the first year and was joined by “The Bowlologist” Damien Fleming & Dean Jones. “Flem” returned as MC in 2013 and hosted a panel of Merv Hughes & Rodney Hogg. The following year he hosted Simon O’Donnell & Brad Hodge on the panel. Each year these guys have provided excellent entertained with their memories of and insights into test cricket.
It’s not all about beer & banter. The serious side is an opportunity for the blokes to listen to someone’s person experience with prostate cancer and the need to take responsibility for their own health and be tested. The funds generated to aid prostate cancer research are a bonus.
What started with 200 attendees in 2012 grew to 400 last year and the venue size will allow only a small increase this year. “Flem” is back with another couple of Aussie sporting greats for a very entertaining afternoon at Dungula Function Centre Moama, Friday 9th October.
